White Walls and Gold Sharpies

Sorry I'm late posting this, its been a heck of a week. I ended up paying a visit the the ER last week but all is fine now. It just delayed my posting a bit because i've been taking it easy and resting. nevertheless there's two projects in this post...so its going to be a long read. In case You're wondering we started a new room makeover....our guest bedroom.

I'm sorry for anyone that's stayed with us recently. It's very crowded with storage boxes, the bed is at an awkward angle making the room hard to maneuver in. It's also it's filled with unwanted home decor items that I don't want anymore (y'all are more than welcome to come and take).

I went for the whole out of sight out of mind with this room. Tossing stuff in there like crazy!

Yeah its out of sight and mind until you open the bedroom door and your smacked in the face with a bunch of hot mess.

I found an old picture of the room when we first moved in.
I'm too ashamed to show you its current state.
The picture quality is awful and its super dark, but you can see the room well enough.

I've told you once before I judge the previous owners on their paint taste.

Tan floors and walls? Boring!!! When I go into a room I want to love it, I want to see different. I want our guest to come in the room and LOVE it (but not LOVE it too much to where they become freeloaders...that just wont fly). I'm also wanting to keep it very gender friendly. By gender friendly I mean

In this house our spare bedrooms are considered small. So whatever I planned to do, needs to trick our guests into thinking it's bigger than it actually is. An Illusion if you will!

White walls...

White wall seem larger to the eye, than small rooms with colored walls. But hey that's just my opinion.

I also completely removed the bi-fold doors to the closet, to make the room a bit more versatile & open. I have something planned for these door's later on that you'll want go rip the doors off your closets.

I've always been a huge fan of the color white. You have to be a brave soul to use it in a house with three dogs. I ended up choosing from Behr's great collection and left Home Depot with :

Painting this room took FOREVER!!! Turns out that the tan color is extremely hard to cover up. I used so much paint it was insane. Each wall required 4 coats to make sure the tan color stopped showing. It took so long my eyes started playing tricks on me. I even painted the trim to make the room seem a bit taller.

Before you see the after pictures of painting the complete room lets skip to the next part of this post...and its got to do with sharpies.

I Wish I could say I was the creative soul behind this but I'm not. Mandi @ Vintagerevivals is. Her blog is just awsomesauce.

Beautiful isn't it?

After I finished painting our entire guest bedroom white (trim included) I needed something to calm it down.
This would be perfect!

Sharpie Paint Pens
Straight Edge

First use a level to draw Horizontal lines. Start with the ceiling and work your way down. My lines are 12 inches apart.

Next is the design. Decide how large you want the base of your triangle to be. Ours were taller than wider so the base was 8 inches. Find where your starting end is and alternate marking the full width of your base and 1/2 the with of you base on your horizontal lines.

(There's 2 reasons for doing this. 1 the pattern and 2 is the spacing so the point of the triangle is in the center of each base.)

Once you have your starting marks just measure the width of your base from then on (12”)  Lets say you want your triangles to be 8” at the base, you would mark (going down your horizontal lines) at 4”, 8”, 4”, 8”.  And then mark every 8” from those starting points.  Got it?
Using your straight edge connect the dots!
I caught a picture of Jason and his nerd side showing through.

Here's some eye candy for you.

& one of our little Miss Mocha enjoying the Faux Sheepskin rug from Ikea. That dog loves anything in white! That's probably why I can't get her out of this room.

I know people enjoy reading Jason's snarky comments on our projects so here's a few.

- It's Like a bunch of tiny Triforces.
- It's just so bright.
- You really want to paint the door white to?
- Its like one of those white padded rooms for crazy people.
