DIY Cafe Shelves

I'm going to start this post with a rant...ready? First off I believe it should be mandatory that if you work at Home Depot or any other "Home improvement store" you should know what the heck you're doing. I unfortunately was stuck getting help from this young boy (Yes I know I'm young myself) who either had no clue what he was talking about or was trying to take advantage of a woman alone in the store.

Little did he know I'm pretty good at measuring out all the pieces for my projects and knowing exactly what to get. All I'm saying is if I ask for a 7 foot pine board because I'm wanting to build a 4 foot shelf and a 3 foot shelf above it. All you need to do is cut the board for me and its that simple. Don't suggest I go and buy two 4 foot shelves and cut a foot off one. That's a total waste of supplies and those two pieces of 4 foot shelves cost more than that 7 foot board.

End of rant

Supplies Needed:

* 7 inch wide/ 7 foot long board
Door casing
* Corbels
* Small Finishing Nails
* Hammer
* Sand Paper
* Paint

Directions:

* Cut your board to the size shelf you want
* Cut your door casing with 45 degree angles to fit around the edges to frame your shelf
* Attach your door casing with the small finishing nails
* Sand & paint your shelves and Corbels

I had to bribe Jason to put my shelves up. It's amazing what he'll do for cheesy Jambalaya.

I know that a few other people suggest gluing your casing with wood glue, but I found just using the nails worked fine for me.

If you're curious about the decor I used on it.
* Frames (Goodwill)
* Ceramic Birds (Dillard's)
* Ceramic Pots (Dillard's)
* Vases (Target)

  2. Love how your shelves turned out! I totally understand your rant. Some folks who work at those stores act like a woman can't possibly know what she needs for a project. Makes me so angry sometimes.

  3. Fantastic Job on your shelves. Home depot sometimes makes me mad to, when the customer is more knowledgeable than the employee there is a problem.
